Those images are WebP.)īut for developers, saving some data is literally just cutting costs for free, there's no reason not to do it - especially if you're Google and have to find a way to index and serve trillions of images every day while also appeasing other companies/hosts who worry (kinda legitimately, tbh) about people using Google Images to steal their assets and bandwidth. You don't hear much love for it in this thread because everyone here is a user, it doesn't look significantly better to most users than, say, PNG (because it isn't) and images don't really load noticeably slowly anymore on modern internet unless you're working with extremely slow speeds. ![]() It basically allows websites to host better-looking images that load faster for users and consume less bandwidth and storage.
